More Inferencing & Sci-Fri Experiment

Hello all!!!  Wow what a week & next week it's already Valentine's.  Where is the school year going????  75 more days.....& so much to still teach.  This week we still focused on Inferencing.  I got these ideas over at Babbling Abby.

My kiddos are getting great at Inferencing.  This week we did two activities....What's in Ms. Franjione's bag & read No David & then made inferences about each picture.  This was a long activity but it did keep my students engaged.  Check out the pictures to see what we did this week.

Chart I made before hand

I showed them just the bag at first...this was at the end ....all the "stuff" we took out.

Our inferencing chart

Then they went back to their seat & picked two items, drew a picture of each & what they inferred from the item.

As we read No David, we inferred about each picture.  The hit picture was David running down the street naked.  Got this idea from The First Grade Parade blog.

After reading they had to pick a picture & answer the question...What did they infer from the picture?  and What clue from the picture helped them?

We have also been working on Place Value.  This week we did some Place Value centers.  These are then great to do in Math Centers through out the rest of the year to reinforce place value skills.
Cover Up-  Students take turns picking cards with numbers on them.  They see if they have the number in numeration blocks.  If so they cover it up.  The 1st person to cover their board is the winner.

Roll a Number-  Students had to roll 2 dice & decide what the number would be.  They needed to draw a model, tell how many tens & ones & then write the expanded form.

Place Value Concentration-  where they match the number with the numeration blocks on the card.

Making Change-  Using dimes (counting by 10's) & pennies (counting by 1's) to show the money.

Here is another great resource I use in my guided reading groups.  Word Ladder Books-  I have books for Phonics, sight words, & Word families.  All you do is make copies of ladders ( if you have a group larger then 6 you may have some kids with the same board).  Then just call out the words & you have a great Bingo game!!!  This week we have worked on Silent E so this is Silent E Word Ladder Bingo.

This  is a great resources......check out all the books on amazon or your nearest teacher store.

An example of one of the ladders.  I like it b/c it reinforces the skill but not soooo many words to be looking at.

Some of my precious kiddos thinking very hard!!!!

Then to end our week we had our  Sci-Fri experiment.  It was a half day so I had a lot to cram in & accomplish.  Didn't get pics of our Statue of Liberty art b/c my wonderful assistant had to do that as I had to leave to plan for our Curriculum mapping Professional Development Day.

My kiddos loved our Sci-Fri Experiment this week.  We errupted volcanoes.  Very easy....all you need is vinegar, baking soda, cookie sheets & food coloring.  Got the idea on Pinterest.  Look below & you can see how to do it in your class & your little ones will love seeing the baking soda rise up & bubble/fizz.  At the bottom of the pictures you may get a FREE copy of the SCi-Fri Journal paper.

Writing our Hypothesis.

All the ingredients you need.

Pour out the baking soda on a tray.  This let 6 kids use a cookie sheet each.

Waiting paitently.....they are probably SO over me taking pictures of everything!!!! ha

Bubbling after adding the vinegar mixture.  Just mic food coloring before they drop it.

More experimenting!!!

Observing so they can draw what they saw.

Some examples of the papers filled out.

Click here for your copy of the Sci-Fri Experiment paper.  Hope you can use it once or twice this year.

Next week we will be making lava.  Stayed tuned!!!!!

Lastly before I left yesterday.  We played Make the Most & then Make the Least.  Loved this game & the kiddos did so great especially when I switched it up to coloring in the smallest number.  They also had to use the greater than, less than & equal sign.  Who would have thought they'd remember from back in September those signs!!!!!

They play as partners.  Each player makes a number.  They both record their numbers on their recording page.  Then color the number that is greater & put the correct sign in.

Example of paper

Then I switched it up to playing but picking the smaller number.  Still play the same but color in the smaller number.

I will be working on this, this weekend........

Hopefully I will have it done by Sunday & uploaded on TpT.  It will have nonsense word activity, making words, fact family, rhyming, ABC order, & a word search.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.....we have had a mild winter but it's suppose to be frigid today & I told the kids we could go to the baseball stadium for a V-day party.  Oh this Florida girl will freeze!!!!

Next week in 1st grade we will be doing V-Day centers, Sci-Fri & the Sweetheart Snatcher will come for a quick visit!!!!  Have a great weekend:)
