Off to a great year!!!!!

Well we are on our 24th day of school as of Friday.  Wow has it been busy!!!!!  Love my class but they are a little chatty.  That could be an understatement....VERY chatty but they are all unique in their own way.  I am sharing "A Day in 1st Grade." & some other ideas for Science & MVP (Most Valuable Pirate/ Student of the Week).

Here are our Message in a bottle that we wrote the 1st week of school.  The kids wrote  what goals they have this year in 1st grade.  We will open them at the end of the 3rd quarter when their parents come to Student Led Conferences.

MVP bag sent home with the Most Valuable Pirate the week before they are celebrated.  Each day is a different activity.  Monday-pictures & sharing sack Tues.- Read aloud their favorite story during DEAR  Wednesday- special letter from their family  Thursday-lunch with their family  Friday-  Super Scientist & students recieve a certificate & trophy.

Super Scientist Journal

Battling Dominoes-  I use this during Intervention to help students compare dots/numbers.

Word Ladder- my assistant does this with the rest of the class as I do Intervention.  She also teaches their comprehension lesson 2 times a week & works on fluency.

What the students record their answers on when doing their word ladder.  They use dry erase boards & markers.

Word Work-  do during Daily 5

Word Work- letter legos

Read to Self

Bookmark to use while reading to check for understanding

Read to Someone-using their bookmark to ask each other questions after they read together.

Words Their Way-  Each day of the week they do something different with their words.  I have 6 different spellling groups.  Monday- Introduce sort & cut out new sort  Tuesday- Sort & read to a partner  Wednesday- Sort & record in word study notebook   Thursday-  Sort & glue in word study notebook

Word Wall Folder-  They put their word wall words in their folder every Thursday.

Writing tree map for first grade friends.  Each day a student gets interviewed & using the tree map the students need to write sentences about who we interviewed.

A student writing about Marcus & drawing a picture

We have been working on detailed pictures & just working on not drawing stick figures

Math Tubs-  We do math tubs M-Th.  Here are a few examples of some we have done so far this year.  This is a spin the number & graph what number they get.  They can do this on the activboard.

Pattern Block Cards

Grab & Graph-  Students have a bag filled with 2 different objects, they grab items out of the bag.  Then draw the pictures of the 2 items & then color the graph in correctly.  Here there were buttons & cubes in the bag.  You may click here to download a copy of the page.

Shuts & Ladders

Parking Lot Dominos-  Another teacher in 1st grade found this on a blog.  My students loved to pile up the dominoes.

Measuring names with different objects

Recording in their math journal the number of objects their name measured.

Sorting objects

This was our cooking activity yesterday...Spider web made from cheese.  We have been reading nursery rhymes & read Little Miss Muphet.  We used M&M's as the spider.  All students do is pull the cheese apart & pile the cheese on top of each other.

Our MVP/Super Scientist    Getting ready to do his Science Experiment-

He put water in a bowl, had a little cup & stuffed the paper towel in there.  Then dumped the cup over & stuck it in the water.

We were all amazed the paper towel came out DRY!!!!!

For Science yesterday, students had to find a leaf from home & bring it in.  Then we compared leaves with a partner.

So I went to Wally World this morning to get some things I need for our school wide Literacy Night Monday night, our 1st grade theme is Poppin' Into Literacy.  Yes there will be popcorn!!!  While I was there I picked up this neat find to help some of my students with their letters, letter sounds & finding the letters.  Hopefully they will enjoy playing it & may make retaining that skill easier.

Well that about sums up 1st grade so far!!!!  Keep looking back for more exciting things going on in my class.  I should have some products on TpT in the next couple days, so look there also!!!!  Thanks for the support & enjoy the weekend:)

  1. Love all these ideas! I may just have to "steal" the message in a bottle idea as well as the word wall folder idea :)
